Linux is a computer operating system and its kernel. It is one of the most famous examples of free software and of open-source development: unlike other major operating systems (such as Windows or MacOS), its underlying source code is available to the public and anyone can freely use, modify, and redistribute it.

Which distribution of Linux is most suited for a web server?

question by Srirangan | Moderate

Hello

We're planning to setup a web server on a new box, basically to locally serve all our websites and web applications. We intend to run Apache, an FTP server, mail server and mySQL or SQLite.

Which distribution of Linux OS is best suited for our needs? Thanks!

I'ld personally recommend Debian but you might want to have a look at Linux Distributions Guide by Rod Smith. Here's the link:

Fedora is very user friendly. Will be good for you if you aren't much experienced in linux in general.

I can't tell you which distribution is most suited, but you've summed up what's important to have which is Apache, MySQL/SQLite, FTP (vsftpd is my recommendation) and mail.

I've been using Fedora for web/ftp/ssh/mail server which is suitable for websites and web application development, but the majority of Linux distrobutions are suited for these tasks too, it just comes down to what you choose and how far you are willing to learn it. I've been using Red Hat/Fedora for a long time and have stuck with them as my preferred distribution.

Configuring it is not a hard task, I've written many guides on Server Setups for Fedora and continuosly help those with their own setups. With helping people, it also shows where I need to fix my guides so that it would benefit more readers.

You can find out more about Fedora from their website:

Do consider FreeBSD Unix... Unix still rules in most of the core server operations

I eventually chose Zenwalk, which is a minimalized version of Slackware. Thanks all!
