Re: Networking 2 personal computersreply by Abhishek Chatterjee Well, when you are trying to network two computers only, you have two options. Use just a cross cable, or use straight pair cables with a hub.
Now, the cable you have already, needs to be identified. Just hold the two connectors at the two ends paralley in your hand and check the wire colors. If all the wires of the two connectors are identically in sequence, then its a straight pair cable. If the 1st wire of one of the connectors is the third wire of the second connector and 2nd wire of the first cable is the 6th wire of the second connector, then the wire is in cross cable format (hence you wont need a hub).
Case 1 Straight Pair Cable:
You will need two cables. Connect one from Comp1 to Hub and another from Comp2 to hub. If your network doesnt work, then you have prob in either wire or hub.
Case 2 Cross cable:
Simply connect one end in comp1 and second in comp2. You must see your network icon in status bar. Configure IP etc.
Incase you dont see network icon, goto your My Network Connections, select your LAN Card, and in properties, select show status in task bar option.
Hope this shall work, if not then post further details of the problem.
