Java is an object-oriented programming language developed initially by James Gosling and colleagues at Sun Microsystems. The language, initially called Oak (named after the oak trees outside Gosling's office), was intended to replace C++, although the feature set better resembles that of Objective C. Java should not be confused with JavaScript, which shares only the name and a similar C-like syntax. Sun Microsystems currently maintains and updates Java regularly.

User environment variable:
PATH:C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_06\bin;C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\lib;C:\ant\apache-ant-1.6.5\bin;

Works well, however, I don't understand how one reasons where to put them between the user or the system. What are the general guidelines ?

Use user environment variables to....
Use system environment variables to....

I would have guesed the PATH to be system but it is user???

System environment variables can be viewed from Control Panel by choosing the System icon. These variables are always set no matter who logs on and they cannot be changed by any user but the administrator

User environmental variables
The user may add, delete or modify the environment variables in the User Environment Variables for User field. These variables take precedence over system environment variables. The user path is appended to the system path.

.. System environment variables are for all Users.
