A scripting technique for silently loading new data from the server. Although AJAX scripts commonly use the soon to be standardized XMLHttpRequest object, they could also use a hidden iframe or frame. An AJAX script is useless by itself. It also requires a DOM Scripting component to embed the received data in the document.

Has the time for AJAX arrived?

We all love AJAX based application and we currently are running websites where AJAX would be suitable. But it is also said that AJAX is not good for search engines at this time.

Do you think time is right to implement AJAX for our websites?

I think you yourself have answered your question. We will have to wait before search engine spiders become AJAX capable. Or maybe when they start to take XML sitemaps & RSS feeds more seriously.

But then there is a case where implementing AJAX will give you a credible advantage over your competition.

I believe AJAX is more in than apparant. We're all depending on the XMLHTTPRequest Object here in my company. We pulling data from the database server without refreshing the screen as the user types inside a text box. We're updating data inside tables without refreshing the screen.

Look at GMail, Outlook Web Access has been there for years, Netscape had the Object Push ages ago which was geared towards a more AJAXian Internet.

And AJAX is attracting more hype than it ought to. It's just something that avoid page refreshing, it's not a paradigm shift, it's not a new way of developing pages, it nothing compared to what flash did to the web years ago.

AJAX is a new function in Javascript called XMLHTTPRequest, it's not worth discussing the future of web.

"AJAX is a new function in Javascript called XMLHTTPRequest, it's not worth discussing the future of web."

I don't think it would be fair to summarize AJAX as the use of one particular function. Yes that function is at the heart of AJAX developement, but to get an AJAX based application running, it would require the use of XHTML, CSS, Javascript, DOM's and XSLT's.

An AJAX based interface is significantly different from a usability point of view. Browser functions such as the Back/Forward buttons, the Print Page etc. all go for a ride. Yes, there are workarounds but that exactly is the point, that there is a need for workarounds.

An AJAX interface will be suitable for some websites/webapps, definitely not all.

You don't need XHTML, CSS or XSLT to create and AJAX app. These are technologies that help the asthetics of a page and the strictness of HTML and must not be included in the definition of AJAX.

Technically, yes. But you can't make much use of just fetching content via Javascript. It is the same as in regular web development. You can make a website with only html, or with only content, or with only the styles. You need all the components working together.

In the case of AJAX based interfaces, the components include a lot of Javascript and CSS.

Javascript obviously. Coz. XMLHTTPRequest is a javascript Object. Everything else is your choice.

But I agree with you. You need a lot of Javascript.
