Why don't you use a open source free blogging software - Wordpress. The website is: http://wordpress.org/

I'm sure it will fill your friend's blogging needs.

I tried that, but it takes over the whole site. :-/ thing is i've already got an existing website, and in the links menu i want a 'blog' link, which links to the seperate blog page...(dunno if im making any sense here...) Is this at all possible?

Mainly what he wants is to keep an online dairy. Just posting up a few comments every now and then and then people can leave comments on it. can i ask an extremely stupid question...do i need a database for this to be able or can i use javascript to directly display the comments...sorry, like i said im just a beginner

The way to overcome this is to install the blog in a sub directory - domain/blog and link it through the main site.

Of course you can edit the themes of the blog so that it matches with the rest of the site. Integration can be done, but you will need to work at it.

And yes, you will need a database. You will most probably also required a server side scripting language such as PHP enabled on your web host.
